About the Somerset Cheese Company

Speciality award winning, delicious handmade hard and semi-hard cheeses from the Somerset Cheese Company

Based in the beautiful county of Somerset, not far from the famous Bath and West Show ground, the Somerset Cheese Company is ideally placed in the heart of farming land.

We have over 80 years combined experience in the craft of cheese making and our expertise is well renowned and respected. We have won awards in both national and international shows on a regular basis.

Philip and Anita worked together for many years before the Somerset Cheese Co. was formed, Philip was the head cheese maker for a well renowned dairy on the outskirts of Wells in Somerset and Anita was his assistant.

Now they have combined their individual talents along with Anita’s husband Nick who brings a wealth of day to day business knowledge.

Using high quality milk that is sourced directly from the farm, and as local as possible, Somerset Cheese Company specialises in adapting traditional style recipes to produce characterful, naturally rinded cheeses from sheep, goat, buffalo and cows milk.

The Cheese Shed started in 2006 and we quickly became aware of the Somerset Cheese Company. Their wonderful Fosseway Fleece ewes’ milk cheese became a staple of ours and has been ever since: we often recommend it and our customers are never disappointed! Over time we’ve got to know their other cheeses and now stock most of them. In every case the cheeses are distinctive and really high quality.

Pennard Vale deserves its awards, the buffalo milk cheeses are quite simply unique and even their cheddar, Six Spires, manages to stick out from the crowd. At The Cheese Shed we aim to support the best of small-scale Westcountry artisan cheese making, where quality and character come first: Anita & Phil’s dairy is the perfect example of the sort of thing we’re looking for.”
